Fenestraria rhopalophylla 'Baby Toes' are small, clump-forming succulents that are of the genus Fenestraria in the Aizoaceae family. They are native to Namibia and South Africa. It’s an evergreen, perennial succulent, up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. The tip of each leaf is transparent, and diffuses the light to the rest of the leaf. The roots are thick, shallow, and spreading. The leaves are glaucous green, smooth, up to 1.5 inches (4 cm) long and with a convex apex.

The flowers are pure white and solitary, and they grow up to 1.2 inch (3 cm) in diameter. Like many succulents, 'Baby Toes' produces offsets as the clusters of leaves mature and spread. These are easy to divide from the main clump and will readily produce another plant. In nature, only the tips of this "window-leaf" succulent's leaves grow above ground, and it grows tubes instead of rosettes. It blooms in the spring or fall and has white or yellow flowers. The succulent 'Baby Toes' is a popular choice for indoor succulent gardening.

Care Tips

Light: Outdoors, grow in full to part sun; indoors, provide bright indirect light.

Water: Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Baby Toes are somewhat frost tolerant, but protection is advisable to prevent scarring.

Soil: 'Baby Toes' prefer sandy soil and should be watered sparingly at all times to avoid root rot and split leaves. They need to be kept somewhat dry in the summer. Mix equals parts potting soil with pumice or perlite.

Potting: It is recommended to use ceramic pots. Ceramic pots have a certain degree of permeability. Clay pots lose water too quickly, plastic pots tend to retain water for too long and permeability is poor.

Temperature: The optimal growing temperature is between 64-75°F (18-24°C), with the minimum growing temperature in winter not lower than 54°F (12°C), otherwise the plant will grow poorly. In the hot summer season, you need to keep the temperature of Isuzu jade below 86°F (30°C) and keep it in a cool and ventilated place to grow.

Humidity: 'Baby Toes' grow well in average household humidity levels when grown indoors. Does not like too much humidity. Normal household humidity is good for this plant.

    Care Instructions

To ensure the health of succulents, it is important to plant them in porous, well-draining soil. Succulents require little watering, but don't like to sit in wet soil. To create an adequate cactus mix, simply add pumice, perlite, or grit to cactus soil to provide the proper drainage.

Make sure to leave drought periods between waterings to prevent the plant from water-logging.
